Y Camp Leaders are the solid rock that makes a camper’s experience life-changing and safe. The Leader’s central focus, as it has been for years, is the kids, the kids, the kids, the kids, the kids. It takes a certain type of person to devote a summer to serving campers from different backgrounds and experiences, therefore our leaders are dedicated to making every week safe and wonderful. Y Camp Leaders complete an intense 10-day training week before the campers even arrive at camp. Leaders go through a national background check, are trained by the YMCA of Greater Des Moines, certified in CPR and First Aid and are prepared to handle every summer camp challenge, from homesickness to friend-making. In accordance with the American Camp Association standard, we aim for a 6:1 camper to staff ratio so that every camper builds a strong, individual relationship with their leader.

What does it take to be a Y Camp Leader? Here are just a few traits:

  • A strong belief in the goals of Y camp and the mission of the YMCA in, “Putting Christian principles into practice through programs that build a strong spirit, mind, and body for all.”

  • Maturity. It is a big task to manage a cabin of campers for a week. Therefore we place emphasis on hiring mature Leaders that are prepared and excited for the responsibility.

  • Willingness to learn about each other, child development, new skills and develop their faith. One of the many traits of a good Leader is a open mind and a drive to improve. We work to foster that in each staff member.

  • The ability to develop and maintain a team atmosphere so that others can grow around them. At Y Camp we embrace the verse Proverbs 22:6 and consider ourselves a seed-planting camp. The staff provides the fertilizer so that each seed that a camper takes home can grow healthy and strong.

  • Enthusiasm to give a special and personal experience to each camper by going the extra mile to ensure that everyone feels and sees the magic of camp.

  • Great customer service. Y Camp Leaders learn and practice the value of an infectious smile and a helpful spirit by providing as many helpful services as possible to campers and camper families during their time at Y Camp.

  • Eye for safety. We want to make sure that camp is both enlightening and safe so that campers take home a positive experience. Each staff is trained to possess an observant eye, meaning they are one step ahead of each hazard and keeping their eyes out for danger. We love every camper that comes through our stone entryway and we appreciate each parent’s willingness to leave their child with us, and as a result we take safety and camper wellness very seriously.
